Cantaloupe Bowl 1

Description

Cantaloupe Bowl 1 is a soda-fired ceramic fruit bowl with a bright green glaze over a warm brown nerikomi checker pattern.

I created this piece by draping a large slab of patterned clay over a fresh cantaloupe melon, then applying gentle pressure to the clay until it took on the fruit’s form. Later, I removed the melon, which created round, hollow shape inside the bowl.

This piece is soda fired! When soda ash is added into the hot kiln, it vaporizes and coats the pieces, making a totally unique glaze. Each melon bowl is one-of-a-kind.
